A refractometer is an optical measuring device used to measure the refractive index of various liquids. There are different types of refractometers, some of which are stationery and others handheld. However, they all work on the same principle of the refractive index of light.

One scale checks the NaCl levels within the range of 0-100 ppt and the other scale gauges specific gravity with a range of 1.000 to 1.070. Both enables the direct determination of salinity in water that contains dissolved salt and little or no other dissolved solids. It is very suitable for marine saltwater tanks.
